Carl Andre Thank You Glarus

Carl Andre (b 1935 in New York, lives and works in New York) is one of the most important representatives of Minimal Art, an artistic movement emanating from New York at the beginning of the 60's, characterized primarily by its reduced vocabulary of geometric forms and the frequent use of prefabricated elements, extending all the way to the mechanization of the entire production process. Carl Andre influenced the art of the 60's and 70's with his floor installations composed of unconnected metal sheets and his sculptures made up of rectangular wooden elements.
In the side-lit hall of the Glarus Art Museum, a group of three wooden sculptures are presented (Glärnisch, Star, and Urn) which were made in Glarus in 2001. These works refer to Andre's series of works Pyramids from 1959, which he constructed in the apartment of Hollis Frampton and which were burned there in the winter of 1960 when Frampton left the apartment. Fortunately, Frampton had taken pictures of the destroyed works, so that they still exist at least as photographic documents. Pyramids marked an important turning point in Andre's work: Until then, the artist had always processed his material himself; now, he instead began to construct his sculptures out of unprocessed wooden elements by stacking up individual pieces upon each other.
The occasion of the exhibit Thank you Glarus by Carl Andre in the Glarus Art Museum is a generous gift by the artist to the Glarus Art Association. Since the autumn of 2001, the Glarus Art Association has been the proud owner of the work Glärnisch (2001), which Carl Andre gave the town and its residents out of gratitude for his annual inspirational and productive work visits to Glarus, in connection with his exhibitions in the Tschudi Gallery.

In parallel with the Carl Andre exhibition in the Glarus Art Museum, an exhibition will open the same day in the Tschudi Gallery, where the most recent works of the artist are presented.
